dilemma.

so last summer i read a book called the omnivore's dilemma by michael pollan. at that time i was still somewhat of a vegetarian and my sister suggested i read it. i think this book should be mandatory for every person in america because it revealed so much to me about the stuff i put in my body...and honestly it scared me a bit. i felt a little betrayed by the fact that this was the first time i was receiving information like this!

i learned a lot from the book about the food industry in general: how they contain and "care for" the animals, the slaughtering process, the industry's low profile, mysterious behavior, the FDA and their blind eye, and most importantly the insane excess of corn. when i finished reading this book i was ready to paint my picket sign and head to washington. i didn't do that of course but it made me pay more attention to what i'm buying at the grocery store and why organic is SO important. now i can't say that i buy all organic local produce and only eat organic grain fed beef, but i do what i can with what i can afford.

the other day while my boyfriend and i were bagging up our food at the grocery store a girl behind us leaned over and said, "it's so refreshing to see someone at the supermarket buying real food." it made me feel pretty good and i immediately thought of the book i had once read.

while browsing movie trailers today i came across a documentary based on that book and a few others. i can't wait to see it and i hope a lot of other people do too. go check out the trailer here.

chanel.

so when it comes to expensive clothing it would be really hard for me to tell you my favorite brand/designer, but if you had a gun to my head i'd probably say Chanel. a few years ago i tore a Chanel dress out of the pages of W magazine. I put it on my bulletin board and starred at it lovingly for about a year and half. then i had to move and the picture disappeared. i was heart broken. and you think i'm just saying that? no i literally tore my new apartment apart looking for the picture. i could remember it, sure, but i wanted that picture back. so, for the past couple of years i've been searching for this dress...online, in archives of magazines, etc. i'm not sure how i made it so hard for myself because today that dress popped into my head again and i went searching. I found it on style.com within about 10 minutes. the dress is from the spring 2006 ready-to-wear line.

i feel more whole now that i've been reunited with this beautiful masterpiece. i'd pay thousands of dollars just to be in the same room with this dress. but i'll keep the picture safe here so that if i ever get married or do something else that calls for spending thousands of dollars on a dress, i'll have this recreated. i might have to get married in a parking lot somewhere, but at least i'd have an exquisite dress on! wow, my priorities are obviously skewed, but hey i'm in love with this dress, and can you blame me?

free.

so free people makes me happy. there is nothing better than coming across a sweet free people find at TJ or a thrift store. it usually makes my heart flutter in happiness. i can count on one hand the number of times i've actually bought a free people item at full price. i still love looking at all their beautiful new stuff. this brand never fails at flawlessly combining sweet, comfortable fabrics with edgy components. go to their website and look at all the cool stuff. they're really killing it with the shoes this season. i would gladly take one of each, but i only put a few of my favorites here. (like those adorable cowboy boots that i would LIVE in!) obviously i want it all, but here are a few things that i dream about at night.

Fleetwood Moccasin Boot (i love these because they look a lot like the boots in Anna Sui 2009 RTW collection that i was in complete love with when i saw them!)
Stardust Fringe Onepiece (denim shorts plus mini cowboy boots, perfect!)

hate.

so between binging on Tom Robbins books and the recent happenings surrounding the anti-discrimination vote here in Memphis i have so much anger towards organized religion. having a rally about oppressing a specific group of people downtown, in front of a crowd and the media. Are you serious? i get it, freedom of speech, but when these pillars of morality are standing up and publicly stomping on people's rights! it disgusts me.

what would dr. king do??

you know those crosses in front of a specific giant church in this city? i wonder how much it costs to spray them with light each and every night? probably enough to feed all of the needy, starving, shelterless children living in this city.

i'm glad the resolution was passed, but man, these people here make me hate this city sometimes. can't we just let everyone be themselves and find commonality where it exists...instead of asking everyone to believe and live the same way?

my mother always taught me to "treat others the way you want to be treated". i will continue to do that for every man, woman, child, african american, lesbian, drag queen, mcdonald's fry cook, neighbors, friends, homeless, stranger, etc. well, everyone that i meet.

why would you want to live in a world filled with people who look just like you and know and believe all the same things. expand your mind, understand others, smile at someone you don't know, learn from unexpected sources.

away we go.

so i saw the previews for this movie online. i can't wait to see it. i'm a sucker for those movies that make you laugh AND cry uncontrollably. I will see this one on opening day and then maybe i'll be inspired to do something interesting with my life. Watch the clip here.

sia.

this is one of my favorite late night performances of all time. sia, previously with zero7, has an amazing voice and an affinity for cute/strange things like me! fast forward about thirty seconds to avoid some stupid, un-funny joke by david letterman. i want to learn sign language!
